An Exploration of Video Editing

Over the last few years I have played around with video editing in my own time, trying out different editing software and techniques to put together gaming videos for YouTube. It was a hobby more than anything.

While studying Web Development at Edinburgh college I had a class dedicated to video editing which I found very interesting and informative, it allowed me to build upon what I already knew and improve upon the skills I had developed in my own time. The class also game me a proper introduction to Adobe's Premiere Pro software which is incredibly powerful and a pleasure to use after the initial learning curve.

Below are some examples of the videos I created for my college course using some techniques that were new to me, as well as some I already knew.

A Presentation on Colour

This video was created as part of a college project for a presentation on a topic covered previously on the course. I chose to make a video about Colour.

In the video I discuss the many uses of colour and how it can affect our moods, perceptions and how it can invoke feelings. The video makes use of the Ken Burns technique using still images but using video editing to create movement and interest. The music used was sourced from Epidemic Sound (Hills - Trevor Kowalski)

Sound Effect Dubbing Exercise

In my video editing class, one of the tasks we were set was to find a video that had no sound effects, and then add them ourselves. After looking around for a while I came across this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles intro which has not sound effects, only music, So I decided to use it for this task.

All the sound effects you can hear in the video were added by myself in time with the action on the screen. Most of the audio clips used for the sound effects used were sourced from Epidemic Sound and a few others from Freesound.

Bike King Borders Promo Video

The main project for the first semester of my Web Development course was to create a website based on a fictitious bike shop called Bike King Borders. In conjunction with that we were tasked with creating a video using footage we has shot and edited ourselves, we were allowed to use two clips with a Creative Commons Licence that we hadn't shot ourselves.

In order to shoot this video I used a video camera and a GoPro, unfortunately the video camera has a lower resolution that the GoPro and that can be clearly seen in the video, but in order to get the shots I wanted I couldn't rely on the GoPro alone. That being said I feel the video turned out well despite the quality difference. The music was sourced from Epidemic Sound (Atmospherica - Squiid) the additional video clips were sourced from Pexels.

Ken Burns Effect

"The Ken Burns effect is a type of panning and zooming effect used in video production from still imagery."

One of the tasks assigned in the video editing class was to create a video using the 'Ken Burns Effect'. By sourcing Creative Commons licensed images to create a theme of my choice I put together this video based on Space Flight.

All images were sourced from Unsplash and the music was sourced from Epidemic Sound (Disturbance On Mars 3 - Merlean).

The Kelpies

The Kelipes are the largest Esquine statues in the world based in Falkirk, Scotland. Another Assignment from the video class was to put together an informative video on the Kelpies using footage provided by the tutor and from sources we found ourselves.

In this case I decided to narrate the information rather that bombard the view with text, with only the ocassional piece of text as was required in the brief. Using a combination of footage and images, while also using the Ken Burns effect where needed I created this informative video on the history of the Kelpies and the structures themselves. The music was sourced from Epidemic Sound.
